Epidemiology of Aging
EPI 210 Winter 2019 (2 units)


& Biostatistics

OBJECTIVES

This seminar course offers an introduction to the methods involved in epidemiologic research of aging and to common dysfunction in elderly populations. Students will learn to integrate epidemiologic methods and subject matter knowledge to critically appraise literature about aging and age-related diseases and disorders.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand theories of biological and social processes that underlie the development of diseases and disorders in aging populations;
  • Apply epidemiological and statistical methods to questions asked in aging populations, especially in a longitudinal context; and
  • Identify major risk factors associated with diseases and disorders in older populations.

FORMAT

Course content will be delivered through weekly interactive lectures. These will take place on Fridays from 8:45 AM to 10:15 PM, Jan. 11 to Mar. 22.

GRADING

Grading is based on the following distribution:

  • Class Participation (25%)
  • Two 2-Page Written Assignments (25%)
  • Student Presentation (25%)
  • Debate (25%)
