Summer Clinical Research Workshop

July 29 - September 13, 2019


The Summer Clinical Research Workshop includes four courses that are the starting point for all clinical research training at UCSF. These courses introduce the field of clinical research by providing instruction in designing of clinical research studies, collecting and managing clinical research data, and exploring data (including the emerging field of "big data"). For individuals who will participate in clinical research in a supportive capacity, the Workshop alone is sufficient training. For others desiring to be independent investigators, the Workshop serves as introductory material for the more advanced ATCR Certificate and Master's Degree in Clinical Research Program.


To train emerging scientists in the skills needed to:

  • Create a sound clinical research protocol
  • Collect and manage clinical research data
  • Explore clinical research data, including the emerging spectrum of "big data"



Designing Clinical Research

This course provides instruction in developing a clinical, epidemiologic, or translational question and creating a concise protocol that includes a literature review, study design, subject sampling and recruitment, instruments and other measurement approaches, sample size, consent form, budget and timetable. Each trainee reviews and supports the work of colleagues. The course closely follows the textbook Designing Clinical Research, by S. Hulley and other TICR Program faculty, now in its fourth edition.

The course is offered in a one month or two month version. The curriculum is the same in the two courses but the longer duration of the two month version allows for achievement of a more complete research proposal for scholars who intend to implement their projects in the coming year:

Database Management Systems for Clinical Research

Instruction in choosing the appropriate data management system; design of research databases; options in data entry; form and report generation; computer security; and budgeting for data management personnel and equipment.

Opportunities and Challenges of Complex Biomedical Data: Introduction to the Science of "Big Data"

Monday Afternoons, 1:00-2:30 PM and Thursday Afternoons,
1:00-4:15 PM

Instruction in the different phases of research using health-related “big data” including obtaining data, cleaning data, visualizing data, and analyzing data for purposes of prediction. The freely available IBM SPSS Data Modeler software package, which does not require primary programming, will be used.

Introduction to Statistical Computing in Clinical Research
BIOSTAT 212 (M. Mehrotra, Director)
Tuesday Afternoons, 1:15-4:00 PM
Instruction in use of statistical software for exploring and analyzing clinical research data. While the roles of spreadsheet and relational database programs will be discussed, the course will focus on the Stata statisical software package for analyzing and presenting data.

Scholars also might be interested in Responsible Conduct of Research.

If you are applying to the ATCR or Master's Degree Programs, please do NOT also register for the Summer Clinical Workshop.

*Concurrent enrollment in a UCSF/UC Berkeley (UCB)-sponsored residency or post-doctoral fellowship program that is recognized by the UCSF Office of Graduate Medical Education; or a registered student in one of the professional schools or graduate programs at UCSF/UCB (in a program other than the TICR Program); or individuals who hold full-time salaried UCSF/UCB faculty, academic or staff positions. Individuals will be asked to provide proof of UCSF/UCB status.
